Lakena Williams is a 3rd grade math and science teacher at Team Success. She was born and raised here in Manatee County and has always had a passion for helping children reach their fullest potential in life. Mrs. Williams started out as a Social Worker after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from University of South Florida. She worked closely with children through youth shelters, child welfare, the Department of Children and Families, summer camps, and youth groups for over five years. During this time, she had the opportunity to help children with their homework and began to offer private tutoring sessions for students struggling with math. Through her experience she realized that understanding math is all in how you present it to the student. Mrs. Williams believes every student can learn when we learn to teach the lesson through the student’s eyes. Meaning if a student can relate the material to the world they live in, then they are more likely to retain the lesson being taught.
Mrs. Williams realized that she had developed a passion for teaching and helping children reach their academic goals so she decided to make a career change and become a teacher to further her work with children. She has been teaching for two years and continues to enjoy taking part in the academic and personal growth of youth.
